Temperatures are Dropping & Aspen Leaves are Changing Colors Quickly
Fall has arrived in Summit County and Breckenridge Colorado. The radiant colors of fall foilage have started to emerge, changing from the deep greens of the summer to vibrant yellows and golds of autumn. The first snow of the fall season fell on higher peaks last night/this morning and snow is still possibly in the forecast, bringing colder termperatures which will only speed up the process of the leaves changing their brilliant colors....
What makes the aspen leaves change colors?
According to the National Forest Service, the leaves of certain trees and plants start changing colors as we enter fall because we have shorter days and longer nights. Once this sets in, a biochemical process in each leaf starts changing the leaves colors to the dazzling golds, oranges and reds we see in aspen leaves and other deciduous trees/shrubs. The ideal conditions for the best display of these colors features a temperate climate with warm days and cooler but not freezing nights.
