Creating a more inviting, pleasant and pedestrian-friendly environment, the new transportation center is estimated to begin construction in the summer of 2018. Located off of I-70 in Frisco, the current transportation center (built in 1998) is a hub for anyone coming to/from the Vail area or Denver.
The existing infrastructure presents an issue because it is difficult to see a bus or shuttle coming if you are inside of the building. Given the frequent winter conditions, this plan will allow more space and windows providing for a welcoming, inviting and open space. The transit center sees about 1,000 Summit Stage passengers daily. That isn’t including the visitors using Greyhound, CDOT’s “Bustang”, airport shuttles and the on-site Hertz car rental business.
The center will be split into 5 different phases of construction, planning the larger pieces of the project to go first. One phase 3 is complete, 90% of the project will be complete. The county estimates that the redesign of the project will cost around $8.3 million. The county has received $2.5 million in grants from CDOT but does not have complete funding for the entirety at this point.
