What an incredible week in Breckenridge, Colorado as the 26th Annual Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships came to a wrap this weekend. Voting commenced on Saturday with Team Vermont taking the gold, Team Switzerland with silver, and Team USA Loveland with the bronze. Sculptures are on display through Sunday, February 7th, weather dependent.
Vermont created “Rhonda and Her Recycling Robo-Octopus,” a piece that depicted 14-year-old science whiz Rhonda riding inside her invention — the Robo-Octopus — which helps clean the ocean floor. Judges appreciated the piece’s achievements both technically and conceptually, and the appeal for audiences on multiple levels.
Team Breckenridge won the People’s Choice award, a sculpture created by one of LIV Sotheby’s International Realty resident Breckenridge brokers, Tom Day, and his team.
15 teams from around the world worked with only hand tools for 65 hours across 5 days to each creates their breathtaking masterpieces. Artists battled various weather conditions including wind, snow and warm temperatures during sculpting week. Unfortunately, 2 German teams both suffered losses when their art collapsed prior to the judging deadline on Saturday. It was a stark reminder of the temporary nature of the medium and just how willing teams are to push the limits of snow.
Teams competing included Canada (Yukon), Estonia, Finland, France, Germany (Agrawal), Germany (Theil), Great Britain, Mexico, Mongolia (Batmunkh), Mongolia (Bayanmunkh), Switzerland, USA (Breckenridge), USA (Loveland), USA (Vermont), USA (Wisconsin), and Ukraine.
